The Day Sports Stood Still chronicles the unprecedented shutdown of professional sports in March 2020 and the athletes, executives, and cultural forces navigating what came next.
As a producer on the film, Rolake Bamgbose collaborated with director Antoine Fuqua and the editorial team to shape the HBO documentary during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring a new approach to production and intimate remote interviews with some of the most prominent figures in sports. Through stories spanning the NBA, WNBA, MLB, and NFL, the film explores a moment when athletes were forced to reckon not only with the sudden disappearance of competition, but with grief, racial injustice, and their evolving power to shape the culture beyond the game.
The Day Sports Stood Still was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Best Sports Documentary in 2021.
